Oculus Rift Virtual Boy emulator released

Now you can recreate the experience of using the world’s worst commercial gaming VR headset with the best one.

Nintendo’s Virtual Boy, a standalone headset console released in 1995, is notorious for being totally rubbish – so much so that it nearly roadblocked the 3DS’s glasses-free stereoscopy. It gave you headaches, sold dreadfully, and had pretty awful games.

Nevertheless, if you really want to see what it was like and you have an Oculus Rift dev kit, you can try out VBijn-Ovr, a free emulator. You can see it in action in the video below; unfortunately, as the Virtual Boy used traditional controls, the end result is much like a personal display headset rather than anything too exciting.

This is just the latest in a series of cool things being done with the Oculus Rift, like Mirror’s Edge support, a deep sea diving game, and combining it with an omni-directional treadmill – not to mention CCP’s dogfighting game.

Thanks, Joystiq.
